He hears the slight hitch to her words, as if she's holding her emotions in check. Shane doesn't really seem like a good subject though, so he doesn't even offer to see her. Where would the fun be in that ( ... )

"Tara's been... handling it better than I have, I think," Shane says softly, rubbing at her eye with the heel of her hand. "I -- Kate was... Kate and I were together first and then I ... then I met Tara."

"Yeah, yeah -- yeah, I never mention that sort of stuff around Tara," she murmurs, shaking her head. "My -- a couple of members of my family got attacked -- someone shot at them -- and I had to go and pick them up and I didn't tell Tara what happened. I was... I was afraid it would upset her, so I just told her it would be better if she didn't ask me about the details."

CJ, his mind supplies immeadiately, remembering the ties CJ had talked about Shane. It seems almost surreal, that the most important women in Shane's life came to him for professional help. If he started having sessions with Kate he'd have the entire set.

"Right, she'd said something about that, when she first told me about you," he isn't really sure what else to say, Kate was never really a focus in their sessions, except as a catalyst for Tara finally looking for help for her fear of guns.

Thinking he should probably show some sympathy and support he clears his throat, "Is your family okay?" he asks, concern clear in his voice, "No one ended up being to badly hurt? It's probably best you not bring it up to Tara, a good choice. She doesn't need to be reminded of the randomness of gun violence... she's already far to upset about it as it is.

"I don't think it was random, but no, they're -- they're fine... thank you," Shane says quietly, the sincerity of her response not forced in the slightest, despite the difficulty she has talking about it. "I haven't said anything about it, but... Tara was still pretty jumpy last week. I haven't told her anything. I've just been trying to be there for her as much as I can. I... sat in on one of her classes with her."

"I know for a fact that she draws strength from your presence," he confides, "So that's probably much more help than anything else you could possibly do at this point. Though I caution you against doing it for extended periods of time.

Given her history, i think, and I'm sure you agree, that it's best she not start using you as a crutch, or as armor from the world. Recognizing her own personal strength will help her more in the long run. You could probably help in that regard, by subtley mentioning those strong aspects of her you find most appealing."

"I've been trying," Shane says, nodding as she twines a lock of her hair around her fingertip. "I always try to tell her when I'm proud of her for something. I'll try to do that more..."
