Loom. In one word: EPIC. You play the character Bobbin Threadbare, an orphaned apprentice in the Weavers guild. This game is odd in that you utilize a musical interface in which you must combine the proper notes in the right order to bring about a spell. The spellcasting fits in perfectly with the storyline though; I had no rough bumps caused by LucasArts' strange system. The only gripe I can find with this game was the music. Surely enough in typical LA fashion the music was amazing and evoked strong emotions. However, there were large portions of the game where the soundtrack cut off, leaving you without any music and hardly any sounds. I'm not certain if this is simply because of the time period the game was released, an error caused by playing the game on a far advanced machine, or an oversight by the creators, but whatever it was, I found it to be the only portion of the game which did not flow smoothly. The environments were just as amazing as the music, with excellent use of angles and panning. While the game itself is not overly difficult, it is possible to get stuck when you looked something over, or forgot to figure out a certain spell. Overall, I give Loom 4.25 out of 5 stars.
The only part of the game where I really got stuck and had to backtrack multiple times to get myself going again was inside the volcano, at the reflective pool. I emptied the pool before learning reflect off of it, got the shapechange spell, and went on my way. Had to come back and fill it before I could keep going...Silly mistake, but I believe I made the same years and years ago when I first played. Ahhh, memories.
