TM: If...

"If you hadn't've taken that short cut, we wouldn't have lost him!"

"I'm deeply sorry, Master."

"Yes, well, you should be. He went completely the other...Hey!"

Obi-Wan watched as Anakin jumped from the speeder and into the space lanes of Coruscant. His eyes narrowed, and not for the first time, he pondered the words to a very, very long lecture that was ten-years in the making. He had been a tad too lenient as a Master, he realized this now. He had indulged Anakin's little quirks not because those quirks added to his character - which they did to a certain extent - but because he didn't want to be seen as the tyrant who rules over the darling Chosen One. Anakin had enough issues without Obi-Wan adding to them, and so he had cut back on his absolutely conservative nature to allow Anakin a bit more rope to play on.

It had worked, for the most part, but he had failed to cure Anakin of that impetuous arrogance and inability to think before acting. It had to be hard, being so certain of the Force and the path that you felt needed to be taken, but Obi-Wan had learned long ago on a war-ravaged planet, where children were pitted against their elders, that just because a cause or a course of action felt so right that anything else seemed ridiculous, didn't mean that it was the correct path to take.

After all, Obi-Wan had staked his Padawan-ship on it and had come so close to losing it that he could still taste that defeat as he realized that he had made the biggest mistake of his life.

With a sigh, he slid over to the driver's seat and looked over the edge. He was not Anakin, and Anakin was not him. But still, he couldn't help but compare the threads of their lives as, more and more, Anakin's actions kept resurrecting Obi-Wan's past, and the Knight was continually forced to shunt it back to where it belonged.

"...I hate it when he does that."
