While I was in Jersey this weekend I had an oppurtunity to see the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I was really hoping for something up to par with the original, and I was really disappointed with a bunch of aspects of it:
#1 Johnny Depp's acting. Seriously, he's slept through scripts and done a better job.
#2 The casting in general, other than Grandpa Joe. Veruca Salt and Mike Teavee in particular irked me, followed very closely on their heels by Violet's mother (who was her dad in the previous movie. See also: Mike Teavee's dad...used to be his mom.) The actual actors/actresses were just bad.
#3 The elimination of the Fizzy Lifting Drink Room, and the half-office scene.
#4 The overabundance of computer animation.
#5 The Oompa Loompa(s)
#6 "bad nut" instead of a "bad egg" room?
#7 The new musical numbers. They were absurd, in a bad way.
#8 The ending was weak, and much of the actual plot fet extremely rushed.
Things I DID like though:
#1 The aspect of the ending that they showed Charlie and Willy together.
#2 The background on the Oompa Loompas taken from "The Glass Elevator"
#3 Wonka's wardrobe (minus the glasses)
#4 the Edible Room was done fairly well.
#5 when Mike Teavee asks "Why is everything in this rom POINTLESS?" Charlie remarks "It's candy, it doesn't have to have a point."
#6 the Wonkavision was kind of cool
I don't know, I really wasn't impressed. The original was brilliant, and this was no where near as well thought out. 6.5/10, and I hate to say it. I was really looking forward to this, too.
On the other hand, I'm sure POTCII will be fucking awesome.
Oh yeah, and on the way back from Jersey we went by this car and saw some girl giving this guy roadhead, it was hilarious because they were so shameless about it. Minutes later we caught a guy in an 18--wheeler shaving while driving.
