The cat didn't seem placated by Garrus' promise that Shepard would be back in a few days. After the yowling and very early wake-up call, the cat had let Garrus go back to bed but only on the condition that she stay in the same room as him. Garrus had drawn the line at letting her sleep on the bed, which she had protested but not enough to keep up the fight. Instead, she'd settled on the floor at the foot of the bed for the night.
She kept two paces behind Garrus while he fixed both of them breakfast, looking up and meowing when he moved more than a few feet away to eat his own breakfast. Garrus relented -- again -- and quickly ate his breakfast within the range the cat thought was an acceptable distance. He then resumed his work, but again the cat didn't seem to want to let him get too far away. She'd nestled up against his leg like the previous day, then decided that even that was too far away.
Instead, she climbed onto Garrus' lap, awkwardly slipping down a couple of times before she managed to curl up in a spot that would be comfortable for any other species. One paw slipped and hung over the outside of Garrus' leg, chin buried into the crook of Garrus' arm, and a pleading meow had him abandon work and stroke her.
The purring started up again.

A similar effect continued for the rest of Garrus' time catsitting. While the cat didn't try to interfere with his work (as much as it had done previously), she seemed to think that Garrus was the last link between her staying in the house and ending up in the middle of nowhere. She kept a close watch on Garrus, stayed nearby, and started to make him wonder about whether this was the first time Shepard had left the cat alone since adopting her.
The last evening before Shepard was due to come back, the cat climbed up onto Garrus' lap again, burying her nose in the crook of his arm and starting to purr automatically. She protested when Garrus attempted to move, and after a while he gave up, eventually falling asleep in that position.

"Well, that's a sight I never thought I'd see."
Garrus opened his eyes to see Shepard standing in front of him, hands on hips and a wide smile on her face. The cat was still in his lap, big eyes slowly blinking at Shepard. The cat seemed to think through what was happening, finally giving out a happy little meow. In response, Shepard knelt down and began scratching the cat's head, getting a much louder purr than Garrus had ever elicited.
"You miss me, Cass?"
"Cass?" Garrus said, still in the last vestiges of sleep.
"Cassiopeia." Shepard picked up the cat, finally allowing Garrus to stretch and stand up. As Shepard cradled the cat in her arms, she had a quick glance around the apartment. "Was everything all right?"
Garrus cocked his head slightly as he thought. "Yeah. Everything was fine."

You're welcome :) I wasn't sure about writing this initially as I lost my cat a year ago (to the day) but this seems to have not been as painful as I thought it might.
