The human rebellions 19 anonymous July 29 2014, 20:33:49 UTC
“Please don’t kill me!” the girl pleaded as she stood up and saw the humans pointing their guns at her.

That’s right - the asari was young, definitely still a maiden. She was wearing a white lab coat and was obviously terrified out of her mind.

Shepard almost instinctively dropped her weapon before stopping herself.

She saw a name tag on her coat - Lya T’Lani, junior research assistant.

“Get back to work, I’ve got this” Shepard ordered her team, not taking her eyes of the asari.

They looked at her uncertainly for a moment before they obeyed, resuming their data mining operation.

“Jack, come to my location when you can. There is a slight complication” Shepard whispered into the comm channel as she studied the asari in front of her.

Meanwhile, Lya suspiciously watched the humans extracting the data from the clusters.

“Who are you? Why are you here? What do you want with me?” she managed to ask in uneven voice.

Shepard was impressed with this maiden. Despite a rifle being pointed at her, she still managed to hold herself together.

“That’s a question I should be asking you, Lya. What are you still doing here? Everybody else seems to be gone for the night…” Shepard asked her, trying to use a soothing voice in order to calm the girl.

“They are… and I was going too!” Lya exclaimed. “Other students went to a university party few hours ago, but I just wanted to run some more analysis…”

Shepard internally laughed at the irony that the girl would be in so much trouble for not being a slacker like the rest of her friends.

“Why do you have those weapons? You are humans!” Lya suddenly exclaimed, earning her growls from the Cerberus squad.

Comments like that would buy her a bullet from some resistance members, but Shepard knew well that ordinary asari did not see the subjugation of human race in the same way the Cerberus did.

Most of them genuinely believed that the asari empire was doing humanity a favor… that they were saving them from themselves. Lot of humans believed that as well.

Ignoring Lya’s question, Shepard gestured for her to sit on the chair near her computer terminal. She watched carefully as the asari took the seat.

“Let me ask you some questions instead” Shepard suggested while Lya stayed quiet.

“What can you tell me about the research you are doing here?” Shepard asked, activating a recording on her omni-tool.

“Nothing bad, I swear!” Lya quickly explained. “Basically, we are trying to chart the development of human biotics in the past century…”

“To what end?” Shepard pressed.

“To help your species” she told her in serious, convinced voice. “The element zero exposure does not always result into biotic potential in humans. More often, there is horrible cancerous growth instead.”

“We are trying to find a solution for that… a cure”

Shepard carefully judged the asari’s expression. To her opinion, Lya was telling the truth. Or at least she believed that she was telling the truth. A junior researcher would probably not be made aware of all aspects of the project…

But if Lya was telling the truth, then the asari were doing humanity a great service. Shepard knew that her biotic potential was very lucky coincidence… her powers were great, but she could have just as easily died in her mother’s womb.

Then, Shepard remembered what Jack told her earlier.

“Lya, are the asari doing forced experiments on living humans here?” she asked her, placing just the right amount of anger into her tone and carefully gauging her reaction.

The asari opened her eyes and mouth wide at the accusation.

“Goddess, no! My people would never do that!” she defended her species with conviction. “You have to believe me! We do mostly theoretical research here anyway… computer simulations and statistical analysis!”

Shepard thought of herself as excellent judge of character. And she believed that Lya was sincere. She was about to tell her to calm down and that no one was going to hurt her when a firm voice spoke from the direction of the door.
