When they neared the location, the squad jumped out of the gunship about half a kilometer away from the site and approached on foot through a forest.

Meanwhile, the pilot was flying the gunship high above them, ready to provide support or evac and sending them tactical information.

It was night and the facility was abandoned. It was also located on the very outskirts of nearest town, well away from residential districts.

They noted two guards patrolling the perimeter in standard pattern - they were humans.

Jack gave a signal to two of the fighters who proceeded to fire darts, hitting them into their necks and sending them down on the ground, unconscious.

Shepard swallowed nervously. While normally, the Cerberus and especially Jack would not hesitate to kill humans who served the asari, in this case, the two human guards might not have even been aware of the significance and nature of their jobs. Hence, the non-lethal take down.

After Jack gave the next signal, another member of the team quickly disabled the electronic security with her omni-tool, shutting down the alarms and putting the cameras into infinite loop.

After they entered the empty corridors of the two story building, they divided into two teams in order to search it more quickly while staying in constant communication with each other.

Showing great trust into Shepard, Jack gave her command of the other team.

They searched the entire facility, lab after lab, office after office.

Shepard was surprised, but also very much relieved when they found no evidence of use of any human test subjects.

Despite Jack’s predictions which in their minds painted this place as a concentration camp, it looked more or less like any other university slash medical research facility anywhere on Earth.

Shepard’s team moved efficiently. One of them was hacking doors and any remaining electronic security measures while the other two would take pictures of the labs and download data from any terminal they could find.

All and all, it was a pretty dull errand.

Still, unlike Jack and some of the others, Shepard had no interest in direct confrontation with the asari and was perfectly satisfied with the mission remaining stealthy as long as possible.

Of course, her wish was not about to be granted…

A complication came while searching one of the labs. Or maybe a computer centrum would be a more fitting description.

There were rows of data storage clusters connected to terminals. As soon as her team came in, they began to data mine the system.

They were very excited about the amount of data and were completely immersed in their task, not paying attention to their surroundings.

Everyone except Shepard. She was curiously looking at one of the workstations.

Unlike the others, there was an open terminal window with half-written command on its display. Shepard’s keen awareness also took note of the chair being pushed slightly away from the table and turned to the side, as if somebody was to abruptly stand up from it.

Her eyes travelled in the same direction and she saw a shadow of crouching humanoid behind one of the data clusters. A trembling shadow.

Shepard pointed her rifle there.

“Whoever is hiding there, come out. Now!” she barked the order, startling her comrades who stopped their work and pointed their guns in the same direction.

Several seconds passed before the trembling shape moved upwards. A figure emerged from behind the server rack - an asari.
