Miranda gestured at the nearby couch and Shepard followed her to sit on it.
“You are an enigma for us, Shepard” Miranda began to say.
“You are a biotic, you obviously hate the asari, and yet you do not appear on any kind of records.”
“In fact, the only mention of Adriana Shepard in the public database dates to year 2162… and she is marked as dead” Miranda said, expressing the silent question.
“Yeah, that would be me” Shepard admitted.
“I was about 8 years old. I do not remember much, but I think that mother was a soldier who fought in the first contact war. Naturally, after we lost, the asari were going to enslave her and sent her away” Shepard said, old memories resurfacing.
“I remember spending my childhood constantly on the move, rarely staying in one place for more than a month… but eventually the asari found us” she narrated.
“They chased our car through the night. Then, at some point, mother must have decided that it was hopeless and she threw me out of the car before she drove it off a cliff” Shepard said while Miranda listened intently.
“My god… it’s a miracle you lived through it” she breathed out.
Shepard snorted. “I almost didn’t. I wandered for days through the wilderness. My only luck was finding a group of survivalist humans who decided to camp the occupation out… they took pity on me and took me in. It was five years before we ran out of food. They went into the city to get more and never came back. I ran.”
“That was the last time I stayed in one place. I was traveling ever since. Taking any job where people would not ask any questions. Living in places that asari had no interest in…”
“The survivalist guys taught me how to fight. I was often freelancing”
“During one of those, I’ve had my first experience with the resistance…” she laughed bitterly.
“You have mentioned that before. What happened?” Miranda asked her.
“It was about four years ago near Los Angeles. The asari were expecting a shipment of eezo and the resistance people learned about it. They have decided to steal it. The pay was good so I decided to try it… it was a bloody mess” Shepard said.
“I take it you didn’t get the eezo?” Miranda asked and Shepard slowly turned her head.
“I was specializing with sniper rifle back then so I was covering the squad from a nearby hill. That was what saved me”
“Before they could get anywhere near the shipment, the asari commando team had them surrounded and put into chains… all except one guy.”
“The bastard came to one of the asari commandos and threw himself at the ground, kissing the dirt of her boots… and then he pointed directly at my sniper site”
“A traitor!” Miranda gasped. “What did you do?”
“I put a round inside his head and then ran like hell”
“Sounds like an interesting day” Miranda said. “You don’t mind if we verify it?”
“Be my guest” Shepard shrugged.
“Thank you. There is one more important thing…” Miranda said.
