Foolishly, the humans chose to resist and the asari followed through with their threats. First the colonies fell, the humans there becoming little more than a cattle to be spread around the empire as slaves.
As for the humanity's fleet, it was hopelessly outmatched by the asari both in terms of technology and tactics. After all, the asari empire ruled the entire galaxy and their leaders were very experienced in putting foolish and proud races like humans into their place.
When the humanity lost everything outside their homesystem, one of their generals finally saw reason. Secretly, Benjamin Williams began to negotiate with the enemy. He took a shuttle to the Destiny Ascension - the enormous asari dreadnought leading the assault and was brought before its commander, Matriarch Lidanya.
The general knew that his people had no hope of defending the Earth and doing so would be a disaster to their species, perhaps even destroy it.
And so, he came to the asari, asking for any terms that would end the conflict. The asari knew that they had the advantage and so their conditions were harsh.
The current human leadership, both civilian and military would be enslaved by the asari and taken away from Earth forever. Asari protectors would temporarily replace them until suitable trusted humans could be selected.
The humans would also acknowledge the superiority of the asari species and their absolute and eternal control over humanity's destiny.
After the Matriarch threatened to enslave every human on Earth, the general finally caved in and accepted her conditions.
He provided the asari with all tactical information about Earth's ground defenses and plans. He also ordered the portion of the forces under his command to surrender to the asari.
This way, the asari gained a foothold on Earth without a single shot. After that, the rest of humanity's defenses quickly crumbled as the asari commandos sabotaged and destroyed everything that could be used against them.
Eventually, a wide-spread surrender ensued and the asari occupation began under the leadership of Matriarch Lidanya.
True to her word, the former leaders and defenders of Earth were arrested and put into chains before being shipped away to serve as slaves for the rest of their life as a punishment for defying the asari.
That should have included General Williams as well, but in light of his help to the asari empire, he was permitted to stay on Earth as Lidanya's personal slave. Until the day he died, he was regularly seen by the public while being led around on a leash or kneeling at Lidanya's feet - a message to the humans about what happens to those who dare resist the asari.
Lidanya looked at the woman who was the granddaughter of her first human slave.
Ashley Williams was the new generation of humans that no longer remembered the days before the asari occupation. That was a double edged weapon. While most of them no longer challenged the reasons for asari's rule at all, some of them adopted an overly romanticized view of their past and vocally opposed the asari, forming the core of what was called 'human resistance movement'.
All of these subversive elements gradually became coordinated by a single organization - Cerberus. It was headed by a mysterious individual about whom asari intelligence only spoke of as “The Illusive Man” since they could not gather anything about his real identity.
“You wouldn't lie to me, would you Ashley?” she suddenly asked the human as she stood up from her chair.
