Upon arrival to Illium, Shepard decided to make it a 'family outing'--meaning Garrus and Grunt would be present. And even little Duke--she scooped him up in a glass fishbowl, and delegated bowl duty to Grunt.
The merchant was long gone.
What they did find was a datapad.
Garrus.
I'm sorry for all this, but I didn't want you to shoot first and ask questions later. You'd kill me and waste a good bit of time looking for the parents. I gave the egg to that trader because you and Shepard were definitely a thing, even when she stopped you from killing me. Even if you didn't know it.
You'd make great parents, I knew. The hanar was an orphan; I found it in a burgled Illium apartment, in an aquarium. There was a body in the other room. I was going to get the hanar in its aquarium to somebody, but then I saw Shepard.
You two are much better than foster care.

"Oh, God, I should have noticed, Garrus, I'm sor-- Grunt, you spit Duke out right now!"
Indeed, Grunt had tipped the fishbowl back against his lips, hoping to slurp down the little hanar. Duke was clinging to the bowl with his tentacles, and whimpering in fear.
Grunt did so, sulkily. "But Battlemaster--"
Shepard snatched Duke and his bowl away from the hungry krogan. "Just because he lives in water does not make him a fish. I do not want you eating your little brother."
"It's my brother now?" Grunt whined
"Yes, he is. He is a hanar." She looked down at the newest addition to the family. "Do this again and you're off ground missions for a month. As it stands, I'll have your dinosaurs locked up."

Oh my god this story on the whole is adorable but I just squealed like a moron because Lantar oh my god I didn't think it was possible for me to love him more but giving them a poor little hanar orphan because he knew they'd be good parents? These are little fluffy tears in my eyes. I love this story.
