After Dark II 1/? anonymous November 20 2012, 21:10:13 UTC
It was late. Usually at this time Garrus was sleeping, resting to be at his best for the next day in the Spectre training, but tonight he had taken the long way home. He did it more often than he’d like to admit, but after leaving the Normandy and Shepard he wanted to have his thoughts sorted out before seeing her again. He was the last from her non-human crew that left the ship after defeating Saren. First was Tali - two days after the fight she returned to flotilla with her files on geth, then Wrex, but he didn’t reveal his plans. Liara was third who went back to her old life. Garrus had delayed it for as long as he could and Shepard didn’t even once mention she wanted him gone, but he had felt when it was time.

It was amazing how she had gained everyone’s loyalty despite her difficult character. She was stubborn and often harsh, but she also took time to get to know everyone. Shepard even managed to get humans on the ship accept him and the rest of the other species crewmembers. Considering the war had ended only ten years ago it was a remarkable achievement. They trusted her even when disagreed and he was no exception, though Garrus couldn’t really remember the last time they had had an argument.

He often watched her with admiration. Others would’ve been slowed down by a past like hers, but she had turned it into her strength. Shepard went on her missions with the same passion and fire he had seen when they had killed the turians that had watched their torture. And he never let himself relax. Garrus had no problem matching her pace on the battlefield, there was no mercy or hesitation on his behalf when it came to dealing with the darkest side of the galaxy and it made him a perfect companion for her.

Their relationship had changed. He still wasn’t sure what it was that held them together back in that base or why it had been so important to save each other, but there on the Normandy, everything seemed simple enough. She was his commanding officer and the first person in a long time that he trusted and talked freely to. For her Garrus was a confidant and adviser. He had found out that her only fear was to lose control over the hate that had been planted inside her. It was his part to reassure her that she was making the right choices and she returned the favor when he needed it.

The two of them no longer relied on each other as the last hope to survive and the comradeship and affection that was left from their previous time together had turned into a friendship.

That was the reason he decided to leave. To her Garrus had said he wanted to begin the Spectre training to be more useful when the Reapers found a way to return. The truth was Shepard had become more than a friend to him. He didn’t realize it until others started to leave and they had more time to spend alone. They were sent to fight geth, but there wasn’t the same urgency to assignments compared to the ones months ago. For the first time since their meeting they could get to know each other without stress or distractions and he liked her, so much he was afraid it went far beyond even the complicated friendship they had. Afraid he was falling in love with her.

It had happened so slowly he hadn’t even noticed at first. Their conversations became longer because he didn’t want to see her leave, he worried more when she went on missions without him and his heart beat faster whenever she was around. When he realized what was happening, everything changed. At first he thought it would pass, tried to find an explanation to those emotions by tying them to their past, but at the end he always came to the same conclusion.

It was nothing like love in vids that made person happy and thrilled. His feelings made him miserable and angry. He knew it shouldn’t have happened. He was a turian and the one who had raped her. Garrus hadn’t forgiven it himself and despite what Shepard had said, he was sure she hadn’t either, at least not completely. Sometimes Garrus felt like the biggest bastard in the galaxy for wanting more than he already had, sometimes he allowed himself to daydream of her returning the feeling. But in reality it would never happen and that left him heartbroken.
