He doesn't think-well, he knows he could get through this without his relationship with Kaidan the same way he got through Saren and the collectors, it's just-Everything's a little easier with Kaidan. With Kaidan there's someone to help John remember that there is more in the galaxy than wars that are older than any of them. Kaidan gives him something of his own to hope for, a peace of future to walk toward.

And okay, the sex is really good, but that's beside the point.

When they first met, John didn't think he could have something like this, much less with Kaidan. John had been down the road of Alliance fraternization before, and it hadn't ended well. If their mission hadn't been so important, maybe-but then he died and stepped into some sort of alternate universe where Cerberus started making sense, and then the reapers came-

John just felt lucky to have Kaidan.

"Hey," John said, nodding. Kaidan smiled at him and gave him a once-over. John's knees definitely did not develop a sudden weakness. He would admit shifting to lean against the back of the elevator in a way that could be loosely described as saucy.

Kaidan kissed him as the doors closed and smiled, "So where are you headed off to now, Commander?"

"Didn't know you were into the whole rank thing, Major," John said, lips stretching into a full smile as Kaidan's chuckle fluttered through the space between his ribs, "Was just headed up to the CIC to check on some Spectre reports, and then to make sure the admirals haven't gotten themselves killed trying to pick apart Legion. You?"

"Just checked the Spectre reports, combed through the authorization requests, and sent in our status and intel reports. Yes, 'our.' We're both Spectres now, and the council has us down as working as a team, John. Let me take some of the load," Kaidan said, thumb stroking along John's cheekbones.

Of course, Kaidan is right. John should let him help. John does. Well, he would. It's just that there are always new crises popping up, and he always has trouble sleeping so he might as well get more work done in the extra time that frees up. John gives Kaidan an approximation of a reassuring smile while he starts to run through the list of other things he should really check on. He should really try to get Wrex on the vidcomm. And feed his hamster. And make sure his fish are alive. Oh, he hopes his fish are alive. There is nothing like having to space dead fish.

The elevator groans and jerks before stopping between floors entirely.

That's exactly what John needs. To be stuck in an elevator on his own damn ship, "EDI? What's going on?"
