Is there a key to all the specialized symbols that pop up in the codex or anywhere?

I think I accidentally flirted with Jaal even though it wasn't the heart that I clicked on. The line she said made it sound like she was asking him on a date.

Heart-in-head: emotional
Cog-in-head: logical
Round-spiral-in-head: casual
Square-spiral-in-head: professional
Heart: Romantic

The casual dialogue does occasionally seem to be of the sort that might be taken as flirtatious if it had the right context to it I guess?

Some of the spiral in head, I interpreted as 'aggressive' in the cases I chose it. But 'casual' might be right, too.

I finally found a key in the codex. There is the heart for flirtation and then side by side people indicating friendship. That's what I clicked with Jaal. Still sounded awkward but I'm beginning to like how unsure my Ryder sounds about things. Lol

Reminds me of Mars in ME3 where some of the dialog when you first find Liara sound like you've romanced her even if you haven't and it's really weird...

Remember when romancing wasn't even indicated by a special icon? Ah.... those were the days.

I still remember the lamentations of the gamer dudes who accidentally got facemashed by Anders.

Remember when everyone including the developers weren't so batshit obsessed with romance subplots like come on guys if you want porn you can get it on the internet and it's like actual fucking porn this is like five minutes out of a 100+ hour game calm down

DarkSydePhil accidentally romancing Cortez will always be one of my fondest memories.

From what I heard the two people side by side is the romance option for Jaal since angarans practice polygamy

He gets a 'heart' option eventually. But... I'm kind of hoping it's true with the polygamy...? ! Trying to avoid spoilers, but I wonder if you can seduce 2 of your teammates (versus other random encounters - shoot, are some of the non-Tempest people actual romances? Or are they all just flings?). For sure trying until someone forces me to choose. XD

You mean simultaneously for polygamy? Probably not. I went to a Romance panel with Gaider and the Weekes' a while back where they discussed the coding logistics of polyamory, and the upshot was that they didn't see it happening unless the protag was being added to a previously established couple.

Coming back to ths after having played through the Jaalmance, I understand a couple of things now both about the friendship icon and angaran culture. The angara aren't polygamous: motherhood is some kind of social status. Mothers are "shared" with the community. In Jaal's words, the women he liked as a younger man "became one of the mothers" when she married his brother and had children. I've even heard the Roekaar yell "Motherless" as an insult. [Jaalmance spoilers?]The friendship icon is there first because Jaal is so mistrusting of outsiders. Also, I think it plays to his character. On Aya, you can overhear two women disucssing Jaal and how "dense" he is when he's being flirted with, so I think the buildup has to be there for him in particular because it suits his personality better to go from strangers, to friendship, to romantic. If you read his Codex Crew update throughout the game, it talks about how close you're getting, where with other companions, when you romance them it mentions that they enjoy flirting right away.

I suppose I should read his codex lol.

(I'm idk how many hours into this playthrough, and I still don't know who my Ryder is going to end up with.)

The codex entries are surprisingly interesting! I like the ones about Ryder too.

Who are the main contenders for your Ryder's heart?

Liam, Jaal, Reyes, and Peebee lol. I wanted my Ryder to wind up with Liam or Jaal, but for Reasons(tm), she's started bouncing off them. She accidentally fell face first into Peebee's "fling" option, which was kind of fun and interesting, but I'm not sure if that means she's now locked out of the "real" romance. I know Reyes is romancable, but I don't know if it's a "real" one or a light one (and there's a particular scene I've already had with him that I really, really liked how it was done).

Jaal is still on the table, and I know you're space squid-kitty trash lol. I just don't know if she wants to partner with him romantically.

I'm not sure if that means she's now locked out of the "real" romance.

I don't think so? I haven't taken the fling option myself-Peebee strikes me as incredibly young, like teenager young (or maybe i'm just getting old -_-)-but there's a line she says right before the "yes to fling" option. I remember it because I just had that option with my BroRyder. She says something like "even if you have something else going on, I can be discreet." So my impression is you can have your Peebs and your main romance, but if you want to pursue PB as "the" romance, it'll take more than the fling?

I'm not sure about Reyes, though. I haven't heard if you can romance anyone after him or not.

I know you're space squid-kitty trash lol

Yep. lol I think he might go down in the books as one of my favorite bioware romances, right up there with Alistair, Cullen, and Kaidan. :D
