I mentioned this last week, but you know how the N7 Paladin's heavy melee deploys the invincible shield? Light melee counts as a shield block too! I couldn't, surprisingly, find a YouTube video of the mechanic so I went and made one.

This is super easy to pull off on banshee hateballs and it makes them way, way less scary.

I use the heavy melee really, really late on the first Warp and it still counted as a block. I guess the whole animation counts as the block, not just the final frames. This works with stuff like missiles and Brute charges too. So when in doubt, flail! It's a great panic button.
