Okay so... I'm sure we all know that fanfiction.net does not technically allow explicit content on thier site. However, I have come across many many MANY fics there which contain explicit content that is clearly a violation of ff.net's guidelines. ;) The authors almost always label the chapter or story ahead of time, however, and not like I'm complaining....
BUT. I have been debating with myself over whether or not to post any fics containing explicit material on ff.net. That's the whole reason I created an account over at AO3, so I could put the racier stuff there and not fret about ff.net. Well, after seeing so many stories on ff.net with explicit content, I figured ff.net just wasn't paying attention and thought I'd probably be safe throwing in a "fun" scene here or there, esp if I listed a warning at the chapter start. These would be scenes within a much longer work.
BUT. Then on June 4th, ff.net posted a notice reminding people that they don't allow fics rated MA or over on their site, making me think they have been taking more notice lately. And since their reaction to finding violations of their guidelines is to just remove your ENTIRE ACCOUNT, rather than sending you a warning email or simply taking down the offending content, I am reluctant to risk angering the powers-that-be there. :P
The problem is.... most of my readership is at ff.net, obviously, I've been there for many years. I want to include some fun stuff in my ME3 fic but feel restricted by the ff.net guidelines. I thought maybe I could post an M version on ff.net, and a MA version on AO3, and provide a link at the ff.net location to AO3 for those who would prefer the more adult version. The hassle of doing that might be worth guaranteeing that my entire ff.net account won't be removed. I figure most readers of the ME fandom would not be offended by MA content, esp if they are warned first.... but it only takes one person to ruin everything.
So my question to all of you is.... what are your feelings on this matter? What have you done? How do you handle this problem? What is your experience with this? I haven't written anything MA for a very, very long time, and the last MA thing I posted on ff.net I took down and moved to a different site for the same reason. But that was a stand-alone naughty fic, easy to just move. The ME3 fic would belong on ff.net, if it wasn't for two little scenes I'd just like to push slightly above that M rating.... GAH.
HELP! :S
