I've been realizing lately that as an author trying to write military sci-fi, my knowledge of military culture is painfully slim. I have no military experience myself, and I don't know anyone who serves.
What I'm looking for is thoughts on good sources of research. I've found a few interesting things, like a Wikipedia entry of Marine jargon (because boy do they love their acronyms), and Doonesbury's The Sandbox, which aggregates military blogs from American soldiers serving overseas. The latter has been fascinating, it's a great look at the everyday lives of soldiers.
Books, blogs, movies, sites you like? Sci-fi counts, I'm not trying to accurately portray a specific country's military, I'm interested in just about any perspective. I'm especially curious about anyone who has experience in the military. What mistakes do writers often make? Are there any real forehead-slapping cliches? Are there movies or books you consider reasonably accurate?
