The Commonwealth Vintage Dancers run a series of Civil War era dances 2nd and 4th Fridays in Salem, MA, in the 1813 Old Town Hall. No prior dance experience required. Steampunk costumes welcomed. Mass Transit available, as is carpooling. Sometimes folks meet up beforehand for dinner, frequently they go out *after* for a little something.

Here's the email announcement with more details:

There will be another Salem Vintage Dance this coming Friday.

If you are planning on going to the Returning Heroes Ball on March 28
these dances are great practice. At the Salem Vintage Dances you can
learn or become reaquainted with some of the dances that will be
danced at the RH ball. Details follow for the dances:

NEXT DANCE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 27, 2009
WITH LIVE MUSIC!
Old Town Hall (second floor), 32 Derby Square, Salem, MA

Salem’s Old Town Hall will once again witness the lively music and
sprightly dances of its past. Come and experience 19th century social
dances, including quadrilles, contra dances, waltzes and polkas. This
is a new series of dances, with prompting by Barbara Pugliese.

Salem Vintage Dances will take place from 8:00 to 11:00 pm on 2nd and
4th Fridays of each month. Live music will be provided and all dances
will be taught. Beginners will find that no prior experience is
needed. Historical costumes are admired but not required. Please wear
comfortable indoor shoes, but no sneakers or rubber soled shoes.
Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for students.

There are parking lots in the area and street parking is free after 5
pm. There is a commuter rail from Boston’s North Station to Salem. The
final run from Salem back to Boston is at 11:30 pm. We hope to
encourage carpooling and have set up a livejournal community (see
below), to facilitate this.
