"So, a good start to a better holiday season this year?" Jamie questioned, standing in her kitchen beside Sam, loading dirty plates into the double sink.
After an elaborate Thanksgiving dinner, everyone was thoroughly stuffed, and she was happy the boys could get a form of a home-cooked meal. Dean, after eating his body-weight in pumpkin pie, had retired to secure a hotel room for the night, and Sam had kindly offered to stay and help clear the table. She told him he didn't have to, that she was used to it from being a 'bar wench' for so long, but he insisted and she finally relented as they were both apparently too stubborn. That, and she didn't think she could stop his six-foot mass even if she tried.
"Yeah, this was really nice, Jamie," Sam replied honestly, considering the question, seeming a bit lost in thought for a second. "I guess after so long, I don't count on the 'most wonderful time of the year' to actually happen. We're sort of notorious for not having anything go smoothly."
It wasn't exactly the answer she was hoping for, but she nodded lightly, taking any bit of peace she could offer them. There would always be areas of the Winchesters past that were mysterious, that she didn't understand, and she wasn't going to pry. She didn't need to.
The last fork was tossed into the soapy water, and the table was clean, but as Sam turned to head to the door, Jamie dropped the dish towel in her hand and reached for his arm, leaning up to kiss him softly. It wasn't overtly suggestive or a boring peck; it was just... genuine.
Sam was too stunned to react at first, but after a second, he responded, a hand coming to rest near her elbow.
She broke away not long after, taking a small step back. Sam waited a beat before opening his eyes, clearing his throat and looking at her with an awkward smile.
"What was that for?"
Jamie smiled back, letting go of his jacket. "Giving you something to look forward to for Christmas."
