I said I would talk about things I've been reading and watching lately, so--

Things to watch on Netflix's instant queue:

Kidnapped: There are several productions with this title, but I'm talking about the television series from 2006. It stars Timothy Hutton, Delroy Lindo, and Jeremy Sisto (who reminds me of Oliver Reed a bit). In case the title isn't clue enough, the whole 13-episode series centers around the kidnapping of a wealthy businessman's teenage son. It twists, it turns, it's pretty satisfying storytelling. Well, maybe not the last episode. I'm glad it's only one season, as it fits that span of time very nicely. It wraps up cleanly, and one doesn't get the impression that there needs to be a second round.

North & South: I am NOT talking about the one from 1985, but rather the 2004 BBC production. If you like period dramas, or even if you'd just like to watch Richard Armitage brood for a few hours, try this. The heroine is somewhat annoying at first, but Armitage makes it worth watching. The premise is a bit like Pride & Prejudice, but there's a more complicated social struggle going on in the background. If you enjoyed P&P, you'll probably like this too.

Wire in the Blood: It's like Law & Order: SVU, but more focused on the psychological aspect of both the criminals and the victims (who are usually dead). Robson Green stars as Dr. Tony Hill, a psych professor with a gift for getting into the minds of the criminally insane--while being quirky-bordering-on-crazy himself. If you like the B.D. Wong episodes of SVU, you might like this. Also, be forewarned, there's more nudity than gore (because it's not produced on the puritanical side of the Atlantic).

There's more, but that's off the top of my head.

I also just watched the season premier of True Blood. I won't say much of the plot, but I'll assume anyone reading has had time to see the second season (if they care about this series at all). So I'll just say: I'm SO happy the maenad plot is over. SO HAPPY.

Also, rumor has it the fairies are coming this season. Maybe Alan Ball will deal with them better than Harris has.

Should I reflect on the recent addition to the Dead series? Hmm. Maybe later. Not here.

Huh. Kidnappers, Victorian industrialists, detectives, and vampires. Big surprise, right?
