I was re-watching the tail end of Series Two of Torchwood yesterday, and headed directly into Children of Earth with the full intention of getting through the whole thing in one go. And I did. But I really shouldn't have.
It was around nine o'clock when I began, and I thought it was a three-part episode. Fine, right? I could be done by midnight. Except that it doesn't have three parts. It has five parts. And I'm a stubborn cow, so I stayed awake for all of it.
This was my first viewing -- And I know my friends made it available to me when it first aired, but I'd heard some of the feedback online, and most of it suggested something crushing. At the time I'd only just seen the end of Series Two for the first time, and that was quite enough Torchwood-related misery.
The show has been touted as the Doctor Who for grown-ups, but the fact of the matter is that it's Doctor Who without hope. It's been that way since Series One. There are moments of levity and brief "wins"--but, as I said on Twitter, even when the good guys on Torchwood win, they tend to lose. And the "good guys" aren't always as good as you thought they were ...
I didn't finish watching until two o'clock in the morning, needed grief counseling but settled for a shower instead (yes, I'm kidding--about the grief counseling, not the shower), and wasn't in bed until three, so I'm a bit less than bright-eyed and bushy-tailed today. I was very close to taking a personal day.
Ooh. AND--I was watching Torchwood instead of breaking down the cardboard boxes that I've accumulated. So those didn't go out with the recycling today. But the rest of the recycling and trash did make it. Shocking, really.
On tonight's agenda, provided that I don't find a way to distract myself (let's face it, a very real possibility), is more cleaning--because Andrea and her girlfriend Nicole are coming to visit this weekend, and my flat is still in its typical "it's just me and I don't care that there's paper and cardboard everywhere" state. Having company is good for my flat.
At least the bright blue painters' tape is gone from the kitchen. I did some touch-ups to the aqua over the weekend and finally felt satisfied enough with the uniformity to pull the tape and see the finished product. It looks much better sans blue border (which had a way of making the aqua-green look robin's egg blue in a certain light).
