just checking in

I'm make a concerted effort to take a mental step away from some things--because, when I let myself, I get consumed by things best left unsaid and unthought--so here I am, talking about something else. Really, talking about nothing at all.

Been watching Law & Order on Netflix instant queue. I didn't realise how many seasons (and hours) there are of SVU and Criminal Intent. There are a lot.

Finished reading Dante Club, the ending of which I did not see coming. Finished reading Shutter Island, the general ending of which I felt coming from miles off, though not the particulars.

I won't give anything away about plots. They were both entertaining in their own ways, but I think I preferred Shutter Island. It has a more deliberate feeling about it, and the details are more meaningful. Dante Club has a lot of red herring details throughout, which would be fine if they merely brought the reader's expectation on a false course--but they also slow down the story-telling, and that's a mistake.

After reading the book and watching the Shutter Island trailer, I think Hollywood has taken its share of liberties (SHOCKING) to create a thriller that isn't there. Is it an unsettling read? Yes. But it's not what I'd call a thriller. I'll be interested to see the film, though, if only for comparison.

Not sure if I hate DiCaprio's accent because I know he doesn't sound that way normally--or if it's because he's doing it wrong. Probably the former, but it's a bit distracting.

I'm now reading The Big Over Easy, the first book of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime series. The straight-faced, dry-humoured approach to a fantastic situation is something I've always appreciated in the Thursday Next series, and this book has that same matter-of-fact narrative. I think it's going to make a nice change of pace from what else I've been reading lately.

And confession--I'm probably going to skip out of work early so I can go see Where the Wild Things Are. I was overly productive this week, anyway, so I'm checking addresses to kill time. And there are always addresses to check. If it's a project that doesn't end, is it really a project?
