got id?

After turning inside-out several bags and coat pockets yesterday I was left with a mess (that I still need to clean up but am avoiding by my being downstairs and its being upstairs)--and still no appearance of my driver's license. So I ordered a new one on the Massachusetts RMV website. Odd thing, being able to order a replacement license online. Nice though. I'm very happy I won't have to stand in that nightmare queue from Hell in the Beverly office.

I didn't notice the absence of my license until Friday evening when I was in the Apple Store on Boylston St. You're supposed to need it for the transaction, but the guy helping me waived it, which I appreciated, but still expressed a certain amount of discouragement as I'd been planning on having a drink later. "You've definitely got your priorities in order," remarked Techie. I laughed. But, internally: I'm not a drunk! I swear!

I'm honestly not, though. That would've been my first drink in over a month--and I didn't have it, because the license remained lost and I didn't trust the staff not to ask. I did, however, have lobster/shrimp enchiladas. They were delicious and more than made up for my not being able to order the margarita I wanted. The Cactus Club on Boylston St, by the way, is a very busy but very worthwhile establishment. Go there!

So--the dark side of Friday was discovering that I had misplaced my license. But now that I'm taking stock, Friday had a lot going for it. Good weather, good food, and a new snazzy phone (I didn't really mention that officially yet, but I am now the semi-embarrassed owner of an iPhone). Also, I still had the last vestiges of hope that I would find my license somewhere around the flat or even in my car.

Cut to yesterday morning. A frustrating conversation with the parents, them trying to be helpful in suggesting places to search (but really just hindering my search by forcing me to be on the phone with them while I was single-handedly digging through old mail and other debris for my elusive ID), and then helpfully suggesting that I just reapply later, go to NJ without the license, and "drive carefully." What excellent advice! It finally ended in my directly demanding, "Can I go now?"

And, obviously, I eventually gave up on my search. My [albeit relative] sanity for $20? Fine.

The RMV sent me a confirmation email. Apparently, if I had a printer, I could print this email and it would serve as my temporary driver's license until the real one arrives. It's strange though; it doesn't have my name or picture or SSN or anything. There's my email address and the transaction number in the subject, but those are the only distinguishing marks.

So, in regards to all that, Saturday was disappointing. On the bright side, my wallet is cleaned out now and I can actually snap it shut.

After giving up on the license search, I curled up on the couch and fell asleep watching Time Bandits.

Then, I woke up and popped in In Bruges--and fell asleep again.

Woke up again, made dinner, and watched (without falling asleep) Mirrormask.

In summary, I didn't accomplish much, but the napping with a movie background was nice.

Today I'm acclimating myself to the iPhone. I feel it should be a phaser--Set to stun!

Receiving device-activated tweets on this thing is a lot less aggravating than my experience with the Razr (which would sometimes send them faster than I could delete them, in the cases of Neil and Russell). Neil Gaiman twitters a lot. It's a wonder to me that he has time to write anything nowadays.

So far, I'm keeping my applications fairly sparse: Twitterrific, which is good when I want to see everything and not just the device updates; LiveJournal (well, duh); FreeSaurus, a free thesaurus; and Last.fm, Pandora, and Radio 92.9 for music.

All that seems like enough for now.
