children's lit. to the more age-appropriate kind

Finished Coraline over the weekend; started to read Lovecraft's "The Tomb" yesterday afternoon, finishing it before bed; and then began reading "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" this morning on the train. The phrase "decadent mountain folk" sticks in my mind--probably because it feels ridiculous, erroneous, and patronising all at once. Granted, it's the view of the narrator (an intern in a mental facility) and not to be confused with HPL's views, but still ... I'm not done with it yet, but there's the definite impression that the intern is just as insane as--actually, perhaps more insane than--the patient from the Catskills who interests him. It's very Lovecraft, isn't it?

Today I'm wearing "Tavern of Hell" ... but it's more like "Garden Patio of a Town with the Misnomer: 'Hell'". Would've been too long a title for the label, I suppose. Really, though, it's flowers and a little citrus (which only became evident recently, actually); warm flowers--not hellishly warm, mind--but flowers all the same. It did have the bite of whiskey in the imp, but that's gone now, and it's reminding me of what happened with "Les Fleurs du Mal"--scented powder-puff time. It's not a bad smell, and it's not bothering me or anything, but it's not what I'd reach for.

What have I been reaching for?: "Oneiroi" (because the dreams are satisfyingly weird), "White Rabbit" (which I was a little iffy on to begin with), "Ichabod Crane" (which I know I love), "Fae" (because it's spiky and subtle), and "Snake Oil" (which I must stop reaching for for the next few months so that it might age appropriately, though I like it well enough now; fuck it, I should just get a bottle of this).

It's not news that Amtrak fails at life, but the story still made me laugh:

The fanfic "Pleasant Conversation" continues to irk me. J is much too casual. MUCH, MUCH, MUCH too casual and family friendly. There's no threat there, and there should always be an underlying threat. Yet I keep reading. Blërg, indeed.

"No Stranger" updates give me joy. It's an origin/evolution of the character, but even so--sadistic, masochistic interpretation. Love it.

"Don't Joke With Me" makes a good showing of a medicated and [relatively] reformed J--but it's done with good humour, and the ever present hint of a possible relapse. Actually, I am hoping for a bit of a relapse.

Oh, yeah-- It's snowing! Needed more of that.

Sarcasm aside, I am glad that it isn't sleet.
