CHARACTER

✧ NAME: Jean de Scole
✧ SERIES: Professor Layton
✧ HISTORY: Jean de Scole is a mysterious man with seemingly no past. He knew Hershel Layton from his childhood, and they were even good friends in college together. Then came the day when Jean just disappeared. No letters, no travel arrangements, nothing. He simply left without a trace, right in the middle of his university year.

Then, seven years later, he mysteriously reappeared. Though he was by far not the shy, gentle person he used to be. He had disguised himself as the Triton family butler, worming his way into a trusting relationship with the members. He persuaded Luke into mistrusting his father, secretly using Luke to learn more about the town of Mist Haley. Jean de Scole's true intentions were to find the rumored "Paradise" that was said to be hidden somewhere underground Mist Haley. Said "Paradise" was also rumored to be able to cure any illness, though only if the person was led there by the "Guardian Deity of Paradise".

A legend said that a powerful specter would emerge from the mist to protect the village at the sound of a flute. The specter was the village's defense from all harm, and the flute, the Specter's Flute, was the village's treasure. De Scole decided that, in order to summon the specter, which he deduced to be the "Guardian Deity of Paradise", he would create a robot to destroy the town every night, under the guise of the "specter" itself.

With the help of Remi Altava and Luke Triton, Hershel Layton solved the mystery of the "specter", and exposed de Scole for who he truly was. De Scole, taking the offensive, called his small army of robots to the town square, and began to destroy the town as he tried to obliterate Layton and company. Layton managed to slow de Scole's progress on destroying the town, and Lagushi, the "Guardian Deity of Paradise", appeared, summoned by the town's destruction. Lagushi and Layton managed to defeat de Scole, and de Scole fled from Mist Haley.

Although, it was not long before they met him again. This time, de Scole created an evil scheme to trick people into thinking they could win eternal life, though he was foiled by Layton and company once again. After a fierce sword-pipe battle with Layton, de Scole ended up falling off of a tall building (albeit a walking tall building called Detragigantigo).

✧ TIMELINE: Post Spectre's Flute and Eternal Diva

✧ PERSONALITY: Usual moods - It can't be said that de Scole is really a very stable person, as he does not maintain a consistent mood throughout even a single day. At most times, he likes to take on the appearance of a man who is calm, cool, and collected; one could even go so far as to say smugly so. Jean considers himself an actor of sorts, trying to put on the most dramatic performance possible around others. He'll twirl about his cape, discreetly strike poses, and prowl about, all in almost theatrical actions. At times, he can become quite easily frustrated. Whether a robot he spent months working on just exploded into flames upon its first test drive, or he simply just ran out of ink in his fountain pen for the third time that night, he'll quickly take a turn for the worse. His anger takes the form of shouting, often ungentlemanly things, throwing sometimes dangerous objects, and generally cursing Layton's existence, whether he was involved or not. At other times, he'll take a mood swing for an enthusiasm that borders on insanity. His speech will become very quick, words slurred together, then very slow, stressing every word, and then, just a quickly as he began talking, he'll be laughing. Why? For no real reason. Perhaps he found something ordinary that you said to be profoundly funny. And then, there is a sadness. A deep remorse he hides. Perhaps it is regret of past deeds, or perhaps all those times of Layton defeating him are finally taking their toll. All in all, Jean is an unstable mixture of emotions that he often tries to keep bottled up, though sometimes fails to do so.

Interaction with others - Jean tends to be the sort of person who is quickly disliked by those who get to really know him. When he isn't working his way into a trusting relationship with those he wants to use for his own selfish purposes, he is a rather offensive person. He'll say whatever first comes to mind, whether or not it is insulting, sometimes even going out of his way to mock someone. He is known to make empty promises to others, constantly assuring them that things will go their way throughout their partnership. When the time comes, he'll suddenly turn on them, laughing in their face as he takes advantage of their previous trust. Despite giving the outward appearance of a gentleman most of the time, he'll often sink to low, immature levels to bother someone, or to exact revenge upon them. He doesn't mind killing people who get in his way, as the consequences of crushing someone with a giant robot don't quite occur to him at the moment of attempting to eradicate a person.

Interactions with friends - Jean has few true friends, though in his past, those he trusted were used as crutches to support him in his shyness and insecurity. In a group of friends, Jean would be the quiet, timid one, who often uses his crowd of friends as emotional comfort and protection from others who would be less inclined to act kindly towards him. However, nowadays, Jean is the loud, "life of the party", as it were. He often cracks jokes with others he deems "friends", often at their expense.

✧ ABILITIES/POWERS: Jean is your average mad scientist. He tends to stick to building robots and animal mind-controlling devices though (he WILL NOT be using these on people). He can flip and cartwheel and somersault and oh gosh there he goes he is a regular acrobat. He can play the piano and organ I guess. I can't really tell how well since he only plays a couple of measures of notes ever, but yeah. He can.

✧ TIME OF ARRIVAL: Night.

✧ MASK DESIGN: The mask he always wears.
✧ PLACE OF SOLACE: His study from Spectre's Flute. Can be seen in bits and pieces here.
