Because I'm curious...
Poll POV in fic
In the Supernatural fandom, I've read almost exclusively third person fic, with a handful of second person (all of them astonishingly well done!) and zero first person. First person, in this fandom, for me, was a deal-breaker. I'm not sure why it had me clicking the Back button - maybe something to do with the fact that it always seems to be Dean POV and I don't want to get that intimate with the sticky, tear-stained upholstery of his mind? At any rate, it's weird. Super weird. Because in original fiction, I gravitate STRONGLY toward first person - as a reader and a writer.
I adore first person. It's my home base in fiction writing - I can skip across unfamiliar genres and plots quite comfortably so long as I get to use first person POV. If first person were a woman I'd be making stammering, gleeful introductions of her to my friends and they'd be saying, "Did you wish really hard?" and I'd say, "No, if I'd wished really hard, she'd be the Oxford comma."
It's the middle of the night. I apologize for my brain. Also my BA in English.
Anyone else have an opinion on POV in fic? Do you tend to read or write the same POVs in fanfic as you do in original fiction? Does the POV you're drawn to change across fandoms? (Me: nearly 100% third person in Supernatural, Leverage, and Glee fic, 80% third person in BBC Sherlock, and 100% first person in Sherlock Holmes fic.) Should I shut up about POV and go back to posting fan art?
(The answer to that last one is: probably.)
stupid questions,
what do you do with a ba in english?
