Month of Art, 6 Weeks Later

Dec 29, 2008 22:53

The month of art turned out to be no so much a month as a week, seeing as my attention turned elsewhere as soon as Ding started having troubles. All the same, I did want to publish a few more photos of projects that I did finish recently, though many weren't in the actual intended month of art.

Above is perhaps my favorite piece from the pit firing. It doesn't show well against this background and/or in this lighting, but there are very light shades of peach throughout. I like even better the deep grey/black/blue spot left here by the fire & smoke.

I like to do some sort of activity with my nephews and nieces when I get to see them. The last time I saw them, we made sugar cookies and decorated them by drawing on the frosting with food coloring pens. This year, I thought we'd try making a gingerbread house. My sister suggested that this be the kids' contribution to Christmas dinner, which changed this project from an (IMHO) inedible gingerbread cookie house to one that needed to have some flavor.

This one I made from three layers of gingerbread cake stood on end and covered in sugar paste, on top of which I placed all of the decorations. As luck would have it, my trial run was a success the first time through. (I took this to work the following day for everyone there to actually eat, thus confirming the edibility requirement.)

Here is the gingerbread house that the kids decorated. I was having a little trouble explaining to them what they were supposed to do until I remembered Hansel and Gretel. Once I told them that they were trying to decorate the witch's house, they got right into it.

This house did have one fatal flaw, not pictured here. I skipped the sugar paste step, which turned out to be vital to the overall structural integrity of the house. After we took this over to my parents' house, the various layers of the house fell apart.

This is actually something that was largely completed some time ago. However, I'd neglected to sign the painting before giving it to my mother, so I took care of that just prior to leaving for my flight back home.

Above is a quilt I actually gave to my mother two or four Christmases ago even though I hadn't finished binding it. I finally finished that on the last day of my trip to AZ.

Though I don't find the colors particularly appealing, it did seem to be well received. (This was the first, and to date only, quilt where I've used yellow. Until I tried it, I didn't have a good grasp of how much it would predominate.) My Chicago sister mentioned that she'd like a quilt, which I found pleasing. I set myself a goal a while back of making a piece of furniture or a quilt for each family member and it is a relief to hear that a quilt would be welcomed by at least some of those family members.

And thus wraps up the last of my art for 2008.
