Case 1-1: The First Turnabout

I just finished my replay of Game 1 on Wednesday or so, but it was Decemberish when I started, so it had been long enough since I played case 1. This playthrough was the first time I did a case without pressing every statement. It made the whole thing go by pretty quickly, but being as I just played it, I think I'm fine with that. I just like all of the silly statements so much~

Playing this particular level always gives me a strong feeling of nostalgia for the time I first played this game. I was studying abroad in Japan, and a friend of mine had a copy and was kind enough to lend it to me. I started playing it on the train home, and I remember the very moment I fell in love with it.

The train was just pulling up to Nishi-Funabashi station, and all of a sudden, Frank Sahwit went crazy and threw his wig into Phoenix Wright's face. I stifled a laugh and glanced around the empty train car, as if I was looking for someone to share this hilarity with. Of course, my friends had left the train already, but I was just so entertained by how completely silly the whole matter was that I knew I needed to finish this game. I was hooked.

I remember the experience being very theatrical the first time I played, just the choices in the imagery they showed. By now I'm familiar enough with the courtroom that I could probably construct a memory of it in my head to walk through, but at the time it was all very new. I think that this case, despite being the weakest one in the game, is a very fantastic first case, a good introduction for this series.

One thing I like a lot about this case is how much more true it feels in some ways than the other cases. Nothing so convoluted as a blackmail plot or self-defense or whatnot, a lot more straightforward, like most real murder cases tend to be. Even though that means it doesn't include a lot of the more spectacular shocking moments of some of the other cases, even the other cases in this game, I still find that to be a fun and valuable addition to the full case repertoire. I wish there was an opportunity for a lot more simple cases like this, just interspersed between the more fantastic cases. But I guess that's what the comics and the like are for.

I think I'll definitely be able to finish each of the cases on time, without pressing the statements, at least for this first game. I plan on being a little bit more in-depth with Game 2, though, considering that it's been a while since I've played it and I need to brush up on Pearl, now that I'm playing her. If I need to, I might skip ahead on the weekends, or use them to catch up. I wonder if that will be against the rules...
