Insect Politics

May 05, 2006 18:12

Just the other night, I rewatched the brilliant 1986 film THE FLY with everyone's favorite 6'4" bug-eyed, eccentric actor Jeff Goldblum. If you haven't seen it - please put it near the top of your queue now - Goldblum plays a scientist who accidentally fuses his DNA with that of a housefly, and subsequently morphs slowly into a giant, Goldblum-sized fly. Mid-morph, he talks about insect politics - which is to say that, there is no such thing. Insects don't have politics. They are brutal and unforgiving. I bring this up because

1) I just watched this amazing film, which has an incredible ending that I am really surprised actually was allowed to stay - it's really the only way that it could end but Hollywood being what it is, it's a wonder that the executives allowed it - and needed to make sure you all knew about it so you could rent and/or buy it for your own viewing pleasure (you won't be disappointed, I promise).

and 2) because it brings up politics and, you know me: i love a good conversation on those touchy subjects such as liberalism, religion, and beliefs - and this blog includes ALL THREE! YAY!

Actually, this blog only talks about THE FLY and what a masterwork it truly is. The acting, the writing, the story, the special effects, and the ending. All superb. For the other three aforementioned topics, I'll let you read on for yourself - if you so desire - the words of two other writers: one a blogger, and the other, a journalist of the Boston Globe. Please read these if you are intrigued by the Bush Adminisration and its misuse of power under the guise of religion. I merely found them interesting and potentially eye-opening. Perhaps you will do the same. Perhaps not.
