Some points were brought up in the comments to my last two posts, and it got me wondering, what would it take to successfully run a truly collaborative fanfic&fanart/media challenge? Not like a big bang or a reverse bang, because I think a lot of people (authors and artists both) don't view them as a collaborative challenge, so the term "big bang" automatically gets people thinking in that mindset.
If anyone is familiar with Stargate Atlantis fandom, discussions about collaborative fic/art challenges always brings up the
artword community. For those unfamiliar, it was a monthly challenge with a new theme each month. Artists and authors would collaborate to make fanworks. I'm not sure what it was about
artword that made for such close collaborations. Maybe it was because it was stated more outright in the rules (of course people don't always follow the rules), or if it was due to the relatively small circle of people participating, and they seemed to mostly all know each other?
Since my experience with
artword was limited, I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on what problems did or could arise from a challenge comm like that? Because I'm honestly quite surprised that I haven't seen the concept taken to any other fandoms.
Or if anyone had alternative ideas for a really collaborative challenge? Hypothetically speaking. As much as I'd love to I doubt I'd have the time to run a challenge of that scale.
Signal boosting would be much appreciated. I'd like to hear what people in a variety of fandoms think, not just the mainly SPN and SGA fans on my flist.
And I think I should stop talking about fanart now and probably get back to making some LOL.
