Old Friends
Epilogue’s epilogue
Getting out of the car, Seth stopped by the mailbox on his way into the house for lunch.
Along with the regular mail and a very small parcel, the first batch of RSVPs had arrived.
Going in the backdoor, Seth found Jessica tapping away at her laptop. He put the bundle of mail on the table next to her and gave Jessica a quick kiss before helping himself to the leftovers of the coffee he had made before heading to his office that morning.
Taking a seat next to her, they engaged in small talk about the upcoming wedding and began opening the mail.
Seeing Jessica’s pursed lips, Seth paused in his opening of the little response envelopes to ask. “What’s wrong?”
Not getting an immediate response, he asked. “Jessica?”
After glowering down at the table a minute, Jessica finally showed him what had been in the small package.
Unable to bite her lip any longer, she said. “I told you it didn’t just walk away on its own.”
Looking at the missing pawn that had been returned by post along with Jessica’s niece’s RSVP, Seth repeated his words from that night. “And I told you that it wasn’t here.”
