I'm guessing.. this photoshoot took place not long after she finished shooting the movie Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World (Sekai no Chūshin de, Ai o Sakebu). She decided to shave off all her hair to accommodate her role as a leukemia patient. And she won Best Supporting Actress Prize (the youngest ever) in the 28th Japanese Academy Awards. (wiki). I really loved that movie. ;_;
