So how about these fires? The smoke from Castaic is blowing in through our ventilation system. Really hoping we shut down early today...
Yesterday was a pretty good time. Mad dash to pack my car with the irreplaceables... Firefighters put out the blaze pretty quickly though. Pretty frightening when it's that close... My car's still packed just in case. Had plans to go into Hollywood to a screening, so I went ahead with those plans... Didn't want to leave the cats though (yes, "cats", not "cat"... I'm suddenly responsible for that calico that hangs around, dang it.) so I stuffed them into carriers and carted them down to Troy/AJ/Robert's with me. They camped out in Troy's bathroom while he, AJ and I went to see 30 Days of Night (the Reservation Road screening fell through). Um... about that movie... what the crap?

Okay, so there are things I really liked and things I really... thought were ridiculous. Love the scene where JH tried the whole UV light thing, and when asked about it said "It worked, but I think they're gonna cut the power" and almost before he finished his sentence he was plunged into darkness. Hilarious. Loved the shark-like vampires. Loved their language. Danny Huston - wow. Ben Foster - wow. The violence - wow. I've never been so up close and personal with a beheading. That was insane. Appreciated though that they realized you can't cut off someone's head in one fell swoop with a dull axe. Loved the aerial shot of the human/vampire war.
But I was a little put off by a couple small details, or lack thereof...
1. The people a little too quickly accepted the fact that there were vampires attacking them. VAMPIRES, people. It was like, "Uh oh, there are some crazy unnatural creatures ripping through the town. Better hide." I mean, come on people.
2. The passage of time. They gathered supplies one time and that was over two weeks into their little ordeal. Thought it was a little interesting that we jumped all the way from Day 1 to Day 18 in the blink of an eye, and no one really looked the worse for wear except this Billy character. Huh.
3. So, why did JH choose to burn to death? I know it was supposed to be romantic with him and the whole reunion with Stella watching the sunrise, but shoot.
4. How did he kill Danny Huston? Did he punch through his face?
Anyway... there was more that I liked/disliked, but can't remember... Glad I saw it - just could have been better.
When we got back to the house we found Robert watching Curb Your Enthusiasm (hilarious show, by the way). After he listened to Troy rant about the movie for a moment he said, "There are cats in your bathroom Troy. I went in there to pee and almost fell on my face. Then something started growling at me." Ha. That would be the squirrel-killer. Those two were not pleased with me locking them up for several hours, but they did all right.
Was told last night that I'm great because I'm like one of the guys. Thing is, I don't want to be like one of the guys. Because then they think you don't mind them talking about their conquests in graphic detail in your presence. So disappointing to hear about that stuff.
On a much better note, Darjeeling Limited was completely fantastic. I honestly don't understand how Wes does it. He is definitely at the top of my list of directors to work with. Followed by... hm... Frank Darabont, perhaps? No, I don't know.
This smoke is ridiculous.
