It's been a while since i've noticed any real philosophical meaning within a video game. Last night, i found some in an older game, Final Fantasy. Be warned, because there are spoilers for this 21 year old game. Seeing as how the statute of limitations has run out on this game, i really shouldn't even have given this warning.

In order to get promoted in your classes, you have to do a quest for Bahamut. Bahamut, of course, being a very large dragon. As you progress through the world, looking for the item that Bahamut sent you for, you finally find it after travelling through a long, arduous cave. You open the chest, and inside is... A rat tail.

Now, why would Bahamut make you go get a rat tail? Is it because it's not a treasure, it's not something that you would ever guess. It's not gold, it's not silver, it's not diamonds. It's just, a trinket.

Now, the philosophical part... Imagine, that you went on this quest yourself, meaning, not IN a game. You trek through this cave, sleepy, hungry, tired, and you open a chest, and inside was a meaningless rat tail. You'd be disappointed. And of course, this is what bahamut wanted. Before he promoted you to master adventurers, he wanted to make sure that you understood that adventuring isn't always for the gold. Sometimes, it's for the love of adventure.

But of course, it could always have just been Bahamut's lunch.
