Steve update Dec. 21

Dec 21, 2011 08:17

My apologies for not writing an update sooner, but the past few days have been very busy ones for me as I try to get the house ready for Steve to come home this Friday. Complicating these arrangements has been the fact the hospital and the insurance will not actually make the decision that he can come home before Christmas until sometime Thursday afternoon.

As far as I can tell, Steve is continuing to make slow, steady progress in all the therapy areas. His speech becomes clearer and easier to understand with every single day that passes. I can see that he has an easier time getting out of the hospital bed and into his wheelchair although maintaining his forward/backward balance does seem to continue to be a problem. The foods he doesn't eat now are only those they continue to serve him even though he has told them he doesn't like those particular things and won't eat them. Thursday, I will be spending all day attending his daily therapy sessions so I can see what other things have improved and what he is expected to be able to do once he is home. Yes, I did this a week ago, but they want me to do it again.

The weather is our biggest problem right now. There is a lot of rain this week which is keeping the guys who are building the wheelchair ramp for the front door from completing what has been started. I am concerned about what we will do if it is not completed by Friday when he is due to come home. I could use a few more hours in every day in order to get all my errands completed-or for these not to be the last few days before Christmas when every place in town, including the major roads, are so busy.

I am still concerned about what seem to be so many things that no one has explained to me even though coming home is only two days away, including the very basic matter of how the wheelchair rental that will be needed starting Friday is going to be arranged. There never seems to be enough time or the attention of the right personnel at the hospital to get some important questions answered.
