Drawing Kirk, take 1

May 02, 2010 13:31

It's been years since I really sat down to draw anything and I made the mistake of doing it in ink, a medium I never studied and haven't used since those stetches I made at 14 when I was bored in class. So while I can't say I'm happy with the results, I remember it could have been worse. I take this first try as a learning experience.

Medium: Ink.

Time required: about 45 minutes

Verdict:
Doesn't look anything like the source pic, Shatner is unrecognizable. Symmetry is all out of whack; eyes and lines around the nose are not level. Face too long, shape of jawline is wrong. Eyes are rather good, if you look at them separately :-/. Needs work on the lips and hairline.

Conclusions:
-All those people who said Kirk was hard to draw were right
-I have no technique with ink
-Starting with face contour is a bad idea

Next time:
-Start with eyes and nose
-Use lead pencil and eraser and thicker paper
-Try drawing Spock to see the difference
