Tears streamed down her face, ending their journey at her lips and with every sobbing gasp, a light taste of salt played upon her tongue. She could feel as the tears rolled down her cheeks, stinging her eyes as they broke free from her sadness. The question, "Why?" swam through her mind for hours but no answer.
She brought her knees closer to her chest, as she continued to cry alone in her room. Its four walls and her bed, at this moment her only friends. The window, a frame of the quiet sunset that beckoned light into her room, like the only shred of happiness left in her life and it was setting down forever.
There was the sound of someone fumbling down the hallway followed by drunk stammering. No doubt it was her deranged father, drunk again as always, and what was her mother doing about it? Nothing. Her mother didn't seem to mind at all, of course it is a lot easier to sneak other men in when her husband was unconscious.
A slight smell of smoke danced around her nose. At first she thought it might be her mother smoking in the house again, but as soon as she saw a dark gray cloud seeping through her door she realized it was something bigger than a cigarette.
Jumping out of her bed, she made her way to the door. She grasped the doorknob when a searing pain shot throughout her hand. Letting out a small scream she clasped her hand to her chest. The knob, she now realized was tremendously hot meaning the fire was right on the other side.
She let out a soft cry of panic, she was trapped and helpless. The smoke was getting thicker, crawling in faster through the cracks in the door. She could feel the smoke building up in her lungs, making her cough and wheeze. The room was starting to get hotter and hotter, she could see the embers on the walls and the ceiling spreading fast.
The panic was setting in deeper now as she opened her window. She thought there might be a way to climb down, but her heart sank to her stomach when she saw that it was a straight drop. There was a loud cracking sound coming from the ceiling, looking up she saw that it was completely engulfed in flames. There was nothing she could do the fire was already surrounding her it was only a matter of time. She gave one last glance out the window, the sun tucking away under the horizon, it was the last sunset she would ever see.
A loud snap echoed through the room, followed by a blinding pain as she was struck on the back of the head by a piece of the ceiling. She could feel the warm blood seeping through, and her life slowly slipping away. Her vision was becoming blurry when she saw the silhouette of a man swiftly entering through her window. He picked her up and cradled her in his arms, carrying her out of the house and away from the fire.
Her eyes began to close, being too weak to keep them open anymore. "Ho-w.. d-id... you...get in?" she barely whispered. "....who are you?" only echoing through her thoughts, as everything went black and the world became silent...
