The bones of an old ship wreck recently washed up on a beach on Cape Cod, in the town of Wellfleet. The remains of the hull of a 19th century schooner sit in the sand, with crashing surf providing a dramatic backdrop.
I went today with my family to take a look… it’s ghostly. Even with children climbing on it, and people posing for photos in front of it, it gave me a shiver to run my hand over the old, weathered wood, and touch the timeworn pegs still lodged tight in the ribs of a ship that is no more.
The National Park Service and other agencies have decided not to disturb the hulking bones of the schooner; it will eventually be reclaimed by the sea. In the meantime, enjoy these photos! It is amazing to see and touch a remnant of such an old ship.
