Thank you so very much for your comments on my last entry, those of you who commented - here or via email. It was good to get that out, and I'm glad someone was there to hear it.
So today, I am going to talk only(?) about frivolous things, because enough with the heavy, already.
Last night, Laura and I went to see Beauty & the Beast in 3D. It was really really interesting. I don't really like seeing movies in 3D - I know that the technology is getting better, and I'm still kicking myself for missing Hugo just because I didn't feel like watching anything in 3D when it was playing, but. I still don't really like it. It's still more of a very-slightly-nauseating curiosity for me. I love Beauty & the Beast though, so I was pretty excited to go. And I think that turning a 2D animated movie into a 3D spectacular basically... highlighted both the brilliant things and the shortcomings of that kind of animation process. I already knew a fair bit about some of the animation techniques that Disney pioneered and still uses; Disney animation was kind of A Thing for me several years back and I did a lot of reading about it. So it was fascinating to see the layers in Beauty & the Beast pulled apart like that, and I really appreciated some of the film's background artwork in a way I never had before. At the same time, because none of the artwork was painted to be viewed in a 3D format, the whole thing felt kind of like watching a film made of diorama cutouts rather than like An Immersive 3D Experience, and having the scenery separated out and given even that superficial depth also highlighted how flat traditional character animation is. My final verdict, if anyone cares, is that I'm still fascinated by 2D animation and don't really like 3D movies.
Moving on. More frivolity! I am currently busy converting all of the Baby-Sitters Club super special .docs into .epubs so I can put them on my Kobo and go and read them in the bath. Oh, cracky childhood books in the bath, you are so much heaven.
