Street Scene was excellent last night. We got one night tickets, because that was all I could afford, and it seemed like enough. I'm kind of wishing I had gotten both nights, though, because when the Black Crowes canceled for tonight they got DEVO instead! DEVO! Oh well.
We saw:
Foals
DeVotchKa
TV on the Radio
Beck
Cat Power
Antibalas
and bits of a couple others.
We caught a few minutes of Nortec Collective Bostich & Fusible on the way in.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26DGtwHcAyg Foals were really very good. Here is a video of them singing "Cassius" which makes little sense, even to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3lWbPEOJp0 It is awesome. They are better live than in their videos, I think, because the energy of the crowd really seems to fuel them.
TV on the Radio played pretty well. I like them a lot. You have probably heard of them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zuf_aU29Ns&feature=related Cat Power was good but we were looking for something more upbeat and danceable so after about half her set we went over and watched DeVotchKa. Cat Power:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVGgGW1ZalY DeVotchKa. Oh my goodness they were awesome. There are four band members and about eleven instruments and a lot of wine. The sousaphone player had Christmas string lights strung all over the bell of her horn. She also played upright bass. The lead singer played some crazy classical Spanish and gypsy style electric guitar. He also played a Theramin, and something that looked like an electric lute. The violinist played accordion and electronic keyboards. The drummer played trumpet. It was all like a cross between Gypsy, Tejano, oompah, experimental rock, and I don't know what else. Mostly Gypsy. It was fun. I bought the shirt. You can listen here.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mskjz3Ca-FI&feature=related Also, you should go see them some time it is FUN. Did I mention it was fun? My brain is tired and I have run out of adjectives.
Diplo was a DJ. He did a pretty good job. Okay, nothing to write home about.
We caught a few minutes of something called Justice while waiting for Beck. All I can say about Justice is don't bother. Unless lame Christian dance music is your thing, in which case feel free.
Beck was the headliner. The band played really tightly but they were completely uninspired. Bored. Tired. We watched a bit more than half their set, and then moved over to watch Antibalas, who were awesome and a lot of fun to dance to. We wished we'd moved over sooner.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI8ZiWcY1K0&feature=related So, in all, fun! Dancing! Today we are tired and hungry, and sore from dancing on asphalt. But we both have the day off. Until 4, when I will babysit a fabulous kid from my class from last year.
