This weekend I was busy from the time I started something until the moment that I stopped. It all started when I left my room to say hi to Nicole and Nat. Nobody was home but Stephanie was on her way to do the same thing. At the bottom of the stairs Stephanie and I loitered, trying to think of something to do while our neighbor Andrew chewed on a miniature glow stick he won in the 25 cent machine. Every once and a while he would interupt our conversation and ask me to turn out the light so that he could test out the different ways to make the glow stick glow. I thought that when he put it in his water bottle it would be good but the build up made it anti-climactic, so we decided to go on a quest for some dinner. Before we left Stephanie had a few guests to her room to socialize. About an hour later we put on out coats and tromped out of the house into the abyss that is the URI campus on a Friday night. There was nobody anywhere, maybe a few kids lingering outside the Dunkin Dougnuts but other than that URI at eight pm is not the place to be. We walked all the way across campus to find that both entrances to the dining hall were closed because they were no longer serving dinner. We walked half way back towards the union, through the woods and the back trails that wind around the dorms, to check and see what was open at the union but all the lights were out and the sign on the door read "closed". However, Stephanie, knowing more about this campus than I do reminded me that there was a lower level to the union where there are pool tables and a lounge and a pizza shop. Upon arriving at the Italian eatry we discovered that they did not just serve pizza, but tonight they had ziti. We split that and made our way back to the home base. The scene at our front porch became shady so I retreated to my room. I talked to Tom and started a movie and found my way to Nicole and Nat's door once more. This time Nat was home with Carly. Carly is really wonderful, we took a trip into the grocery store together and stared long and hard at the vegetables. Later that night we got pulled over with some other kids, it was an experience, and I have to say I have been more scared for my legal record than at that moment. We made it home and enjoyed the rest of the night with some company.
Saturday morning Stephanie and I joined forces and organized a trip to the beach. Chris (a basement dweller), Wes (a main line native), Stephanie and I set out for the beach in really good spirits that lasted the entire day. Before we went to the ocean we stopped at a place called The Umbrella Factory. It was a combination, farm/commune/craft store/gallery on a giant spot of land in Kingston. While we were there we hiked through a bamboo patch and found a clearing and had some really good ideas. The Emu we saw were extremely rigiid and their eyes are strangely positioned on their heads. I did enjoy the polka dotted chickens that we saw. The Umbrella Factory has a lot of chickens and three peacocks. If anyone comes to Rhode Island this is the only place (aside from the beach) I can recommend to visit at this point in my experience living here.
And then we were at the beach. The waves were beautiful and tame. There were not too many people there, a lot of dogs though, they most likely outnumbered the amount of humans there. People will just bring all their dogs to run around on the beach, which must be so incredibly healthy for the dogs. Wes and I collected rocks while we walked down the beach. Steph and Chris skipped the rocks in the ocean for quite a while. It was fun to watch their throws and see how many times they could make the rocks skip before getting devoured by the waves. We aslo wrote "Happy Birthday Jon K." into the sand because it is Jon Kaufman's birtday, which was a good theme we had going throughout the day. This day was really beautiful especially because of the conversation we had on the drive from The Umbrella Factory to the beach.
Mary: How is the novel coming?
Chris: Well I decided that a novel is really really hard work.
Mary: (sarcastically) Yea?
Steph: Yes a novel would just be too much right now.
Chris: So that is why I decided to do a collection of short stories.
Mary: I just feel like I haven't seen enough to write a novel.
Steph: Totally, right now I feel like I am living to collecting the experiences that will write my story
Mary: That was an excellent way to articulate that idea, I am absoloutely doing the same thing.
Thinking about that now, I do not think at all that I have not seen enough to write a novel, I have seen a lot, I feel like in a lot of situations I have seen things that are not meant to be seen and the collection of those images are stories to write because the beginning and the end are left to the imagination.
I worked after that until three thirty am.
This morning I woke up at four pm! The sun began to go down for the night about five minutes later. I chatted with Tom and created a list of classes I want to take next semester. My sister called and it was good to talk to her, she is dealing with her boyfriend leaving to join the army. I am glad she calls me more now! Chris and I then went to the library and studied for a solid 4 hours, I completed the reading and compiling of quotes from "Doctor Fautus". Two down two to go and an exam on Friday. God I love Brit Lit!
Anyway this weekend just ended with a nice pasta dinner with Nicole, after an even better viewing of Garden State. Watching it with Nicole was really good, we found it a lot funnier tonight than it has been in teh past, I'm trying to put my finger upon the reason that this may be!?
After it all, goodnight
