If one was moving to NC, the Triangle area of Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill is more liberal than the Triad of Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem. Chapel Hill/Carrboro is the crunchiest of those and is matched by Asheville which is in the mountains and the other blue part of the state.
The Triangle and Asheville both have active poly communities and a wide variety of alternative schools and vegetarian supportive restaurants and health food stores, farmers' markets and coops.
Charlotte is a banking center and pretty conservative. Wilmington is the Beach and, therefore, qualifies as For'n Parts.
