It had been a bad day, one of the worst, not counting the day Mary had been shot. It might be worse than the day of his own shooting, since even in the most desperate moments in that gas station, he hadn't believed he would die. She was with him, and she was too stubborn to allow it ( ... )

*sniff* Poor Marshall.

I know. I actually think that would make an interesting episode plot. They've never had a witness attempt or succeed at suicide due strictly to the stress of being in the program, but it probably happens. I'd be very surprised if it didn't.

It's where I thought they were going with Lois and that would have a better explanation why Marshall got as upset as he did.

Yeah, I felt like that was a little forced. Like, they bonded, kind of, but not enough for Marshall's reaction. Or it would have made more sense if he found out she got killed or something. It did feel like a plot element was missing there.

What I felt, too, about that episode, is that Mary was the better marshal for Lois. At least Mary was keeping her in the program, and I think a reality check was what Lois needed. Maybe the message there is that they shouldn't always give the witnesses what they want.

Although I do understand Lois's frustration. You can't take a writer and stick them in a Kinko's because it's sort of like writing. =/

It was definitely forced. I can only assume that in Marshall's mind he was processing her opting out as being a death warrant, but still it was forced.

I believe she had many a job before kinkos. Some people are just not meant for the program and the bottom line was that she didn't want to be there. Nothing anyone did would have changed that. So, yeah, Mary not putting up with the BS was probably the better situation than Marshall coddling her.

I always wondered how many witnesses attempted/committed suicide. This is a great fic!

Aww! One thing I love about Mary is that when Marshall really needs her, he is there. Lovely! Thanks for filling my prompt.

this is sooo Marshall, and the Mary I think we all hope to see. A partner that manages to see beyond the end of her nose to her partner's pain.

I hope that once she gets used to no longer drowning in pain brought on by her family, she'll come to see what Marshall needs. Right now, I think she's still waiting for the other shoe to drop with Jinx and Brandi (and her father, maybe, who knows?)

Marshall's very astute, but I think if he was going to overlook something, it would be because he was blinded by hope for his witness. It's a terrible weakness for me to exploit, I know... but that's why Mary's such a perfect counterpart for him. He needs her cynicism. =)
