Title: He's Gone
Rating: G
Spoilers: Coma Chameleon
Summary: Because I don't believe Mary would have gone to Jinx in the final scene.
A/N: Written on the fly, trying to get it in under the wire before tonight's episode. Happy IPS Day!
She was leaning on the wall by his front door trying not to cry. She’d learned years earlier that if she tightened her stomach muscles it gave her something to concentrate on other than the tears welling.
Marshall stepped out onto the porch next to her, “What’s going on?”
She took a deep breath to steady her voice, “Raph’s gone.”
“Gone? How?”
“Packed a bag, left town, wedding’s off -gone.”
He led her inside and got her a glass of water, then sat on the couch to watch her prowl his living room, glass still in hand.
“Mer, what’s…”
She stopped short, “If you tell me to ‘be the river’ I will beat you to death.”
He leaned forward onto his knees, “I can’t help if you won’t tell me what’s going on in your head.”
“I don’t know what’s going on in my head.”
“Come on Mer.”
“Okay,” she sat down only to jerk back up to walking, “I did have my doubts about Raph, but at the same time I was happy. Maybe not first and foremost, but I was happy.”
“Like we talked about in the car.”
“Yeah.” She flopped down next to him.
“So…” he lead gently.
“So, I shouldn’t be this upset. It’s like I knew that Raph and I weren’t going to work out. I knew that one day he was going to wake up and realize I wasn’t the person he wanted. I knew he was going to walk away.”
“And?”
“And I’m starting to wonder if I’m every really going to let anyone get to know me the way you do.”
He simply looked at her.
“Like I said before, you’re the only one who really knows me. Why have I let you in and no one else?”
He looked away, “I don’t know, Mer.”
“But you’re Encyclopedia Brown, you know everything.”
“Not this time.”
The look on his face scares her, “Marshall, tell me what to do.”
“You’re going to have to figure this one out yourself.” He stood up and walked to the front door.
“Marshall…”
“Good night, Mary.”
She stepped out the front door and made her way slowly to her car, lost and confused. In a matter of minutes her best friend had turned on her and she didn’t know why. A few minutes later she would be at Jinx’s dance studio, standing forlornly out front.
