love and other impossible pursuits (2009)+

5/10 *****
Plot: A comedy/drama that details the story of a woman's difficult relationship with her stepson.

This IMDb plot summary is a bit fishy, but what the hell. Anyways, the film is a bit weak and generic, but has some moments of beauty here and there (if you squint enough to see). The supporting cast is great, by the way. Love me some Ambrose. Sidenote: I don't know why they changed the film's awesome name to The Other Woman, so I kept the original title.

last night (2010)+

6/10 ******
Plot: The story follows a married couple, apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he's attracted. While he's resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love.

Best way to describe this film is: the poor man's Closer. Definitely worthy of a watch 'though.

stellet licht (2007)+

3/10 ***
Plot: A father's faith in God is put to the test when he falls for another woman.

God, it's been too long since I was this bored by a film. I can't understand the ravings, I just can't. It's certainly beautiful to watch, I mean, A+ for cinematography. But the rest? And the ending? No words for it. I must have checked my watch at least ten times during the film.

la vida secreta de las palabras (2005)+

8/10 ********
Plot: A hearing impaired factory worker gives up her first holiday in years and instead travels out to an oil rig, where she cares for a man suffering from severe burns.

I knew Isabel was good, but this is just *too* good for mere descriptions. What an impressive, delightful ride! I recommend this to everybody and their mother. If you want a touching cinematic experience look no further. Sidenote: how wonderful, and bizarrely underrated is Sarah Polley?

pierrot le fou (1965)+

6/10 ******
Plot: Pierrot escapes his boring society and travels from Paris to the Mediterranean Sea with Marianne, a girl chased by hit-men from Algeria. They lead an unorthodox life, always on the run.

The story and plot could have been richer, if they weren't so all over the place. However, the film's got these great one-liners and incredibly clever/witty/perceptive dialogue at times. The photography is beautiful, especially in this treated version I watched. How the colours pop! Anyhow, film worthy of your time for sure.

waiting for forever (2010)+

3/10 ***
Plot: A Hollywood-set romantic tale of a guy who is content to live his life without a job yet with the love of his life, a young actress.

Again, fishy IMDb description... Anyway, *where* can one start with this film? So, so... bad. I mean, seriously, the dialogue is just pitiful. You won't believe the things that come out of those characters mouths. And the plot? For crying out loud! Pitiful doesn't begin to describe it. Where did you get yourself into, Sturridge?!

le refuge (2009)+

5/10 *****
Plot: Mousse and Louis are young, beautiful, rich and in love. But drugs have invaded their lives. One day, they overdose and Louis dies. Mousse survives, but soon learns she's pregnant. Feeling lost, Mousse runs away to a house far from Paris. Several months later, Louis' brother joins her in her refuge.

Interesting little french film. Not wonderful, not remarkable, but certainly interesting to watch.

rapt (2009)+

4/10 ****
Plot: A rich industrialist is brutally kidnapped. While he physically and mentally degenerates in imprisonment, the kidnappers, police and the board of the company of which he is director negotiate about the ransom of 50 million euro.

A little slower than you would expect it to be, but not a terrible waste of time. Some of the issues brought by it are actually things to ponder about.

2011: 100 films
