I'm actually in the same boat as you are. My major field is the early nineteenth century British novel. The manga and anime are really my "secondary" interest. Although, now that I've submitted an article on it, am presenting at a conference next month and was just solicited for a second article, it's looking more and more like it's becoming the major field. (Thank heavens I decided to take those Japanese classes!) But really, divergent isn't bad. Just look at it this way, the more you branch out, the more classes you'll be considered eligible to teach someday and the more marketable you'll be.
The perception of the body idea sounds very interesting. Given that I'm pretty partial to Lain, I can really imagine it being exciting in relation to that. And I'll be happy to let you take a look at the Yazawa paper, but I'll fully expect to see that body perception paper in return when you finally break down and decide to write it :)
