My dad has requested I pay him a $20 "fine" for a (dry) mess he discovered in the trunk of my car while replacing a back light for me. I have instead offered to pay him $40 for services rendered and call it a day.

I am guessing, he meant it half-jokingly for having to work in "unsanitary" conditions.

It happens all the time. Parents want to teach their kids a lesson, and kids feel insulted by it.
