How it all started
7:18 PM 12/11/08 · The zombie outbreak began with a dimensional breach from a parallel world to that particular reality. This Marvel Universe was close to the 616 version, the main Marvel Universe, but there were differences. Iron Man was still in his 1st red & gold armor, Luke Cage was still doing the tiara and yellow shirt look, the Fantastic Four were in their original uniforms, and their "Captain America" went by "Colonol" instead.
The Avengers were first on the scene. What came through the breach was a superhuman more powerful than any they'd ever encountered before...who also happened to have a voracious appetite. It was the Sentry and though the Avengers managed to put him down, largely because he was so rotted he was barely holding together as it was, that wasn't before he'd taken several bites out of all of them...
...they managed to resist the mental effects of becoming zombies for only a little while before they started attacking everyone around them, converting other superhumans and devouring the normal humans.
SHIELD began organizing the remaining superhumans to protect the remaining uneffected while the top minds tried to find a cure. The liklihood of a cure was abandoned by most but Reed Richards held out hope regardless. The other were woking on a dimensional escape for the survivors and had a device ready but they never got the chance to use it. Those fighting off the zombies were losing ground and people fast...and Reed Richards got it into his head that the zombie thing was a positive change and infected the Fantastic Four and had them "convert" him.
Nick Fury destroyed the device before the zombies could access it and they shredded him for it.
