Swamp's End, La.
Back in the middle of the swamp. This place is starting to get on his nerves.
He's been back to this hell hole 10 times over the past few months. Overseeing SHIELD taking posession of the bodies, taking spectrographic readings. Matching landmarks from satellite telemetry. He still doesn't undertand what happened here.
But he's starting to piece together part of it. He has a fairly complete picture in his head of how it happened, just not why.
And why is the important part.
There are no real roads that come here. No powerlines. No cable. No phone service. The mail showed up by boat, once a week. It was the mailman who discovered the bodies. Two days later, according to the autopsies.
The truth is, only the church burned. And everyone was gathered outside it.
Why? Why didn't they run?
And then there was that other thing, the thing he didn't expect to find. And now he's got to have all the bodies tested again from the other three towns. He wouldn't be surprised at all if the results match.
He stops and stands alert as the wind changes. The men say they think there's something watching them from the swamp, but so far the sweeps have read clean. Surely, if something was out there, they'd have found it by now.
