Months Pass..

As the Earth trembles from the aftermath of the war for Genosha, an all-consuming threat grows in space - in time, it may menace the Earth itself if it cannot be stopped. On the tiny blue-green orb I have chosen to observe, the lives of the inhabitants continue - blissfully unaware of the dangers that may await them.

A Phone Call To An Old Friend magnetic_fire October 17 2009, 08:22:29 UTC
Erik Lehnsherr, known to the world as the mutant terrorist Magneto, sat in his chair and toyed with his wineglass. It was late, desperately so, and despite all of his knowledge, all his studies into physics and genetics, he still couldn't puzzle out what was quite possibly the most important puzzle left to him ( ... )

In his heart of hearts, Professor X was expecting this call. The gall of the whole situation is still kneecappingly outrageous, but ultimately this is consistent with Erik's personality. Of course Charles will help me after I got myself wounded biting off more than I could chew after a failed coup!

And in his secret heart, Charles is pretty sure about his answer. But that doesn't mean that Magneto's not going to have to work for it. "Decided to try and arrange open recruiting for the Brotherhood of Mutants, then?" Charles asks dryly, "Because I'm drawing the line at letting you share the Institute's billboard space."

"Hardly that, old friend." he said tiredly. "There is no Brotherhood, no Acolytes, no anything. It's over. I've failed." he admitted. "My active advocacy for mutantkind died on the streets of Hammer Bay."

"I see." Charles cannot quite keep the skepticism out of his voice; he's heard this line before. However, "The beam-it did more than disrupt your powers, didn't it?"

"It did." he admitted. "Which is why I called. I need a favor." he said with a preparatory wince. "And I will understand if you are skeptical."

"I am not in doubt of your intent, only your resolve. Revolution is almost a disease, in the minds of old men." Xavier muses, probably meaning himself as much as Erik. His cat hops into his lap, and Charles favors it with a gentle caress, calming his nerves and forcing a more relaxed expression on his face.

"How bad is it, Erik?"

"It's not good. Neural trauma." he said. "I've been trying to reverse the damage with everything I know with a remarkable lack of success." he said. "I don't believe it will be progressive or terminal, but it's impossible to say with any certainty."

"...Erik..." Charles closes his eyes, as his decision has been made for him. No matter the risk, he can't just let the man's mind rot like that. "...alright. Come over, bring your things, we'll see if we can figure out what Sinister did to you."

"Thank you, Charles." he said, his relief obvious. "And despite what you're thinking, it hasn't spread to my brain quite yet, old friend. We'll have plenty of time to play chess yet before I go." he said with a mental and physical smile.

"And who knows? If your Shi'ar gear can repair this neural trauma, perhaps we could tune the process ... it's too soon to get hopes up, but perhaps you could walk again." he said.

There's a long pause.

Xavier, ultimately, bites his tongue. Erik need not know about how he lost the use of his legs again-ultimately, that's a problem he'll have to deal with on his own. "Let us focus on one medical miracle at a time, Erik." Charles recommends instead. Cyclops is going to kill him for this...

"Indeed." he said agreeably. "I'll call you from New York, once I've secured some lodging." he said. "It would not be well for me to stay at the Mansion, old friend." he said with more than a few shades of regret in his voice and his thoughts.

"I suppose so." Xavier is secretly grateful that Erik handled that problem for him; hospitality demands he offer the invitation, but prudence demands he not let Magneto's brand of fanaticism into his home, even if the old warrior's retired. "I'll see you then, Erik. Good day."

"Good day, Charles." he said, then let the connection die. "Ferro? Pack my things and ship them to the New York penthouse." he said to his faithful robotic retainer. "I'm going to see an old friend."
