Birds with Broken Wings Pt. 1: Esme

((Bendy timed, because... real life, you know? Right before Esme takes the Magneto train...))Esme turned the bracelet over in her hand, running her fingers over the pink engraving on the cold, hard metal. 'Sophie.' Pain wasn't fading, no matter how you looked at it. She had a suitcase packed and it sat next to her as she stared out over the ( Read more... )

Sal's not looking for Esme. In fact, putting a decent amount of distance between herself and the Cuckoo sisters was taking up most of her time. At least the time that wasn't spent calling her friends in Port aux Basques and telling them that she'd only be on the island for a few days before she went somewhere else.

Sal is, however, chain-smoking on the porch outside the cafeteria, mulling over the plans that, unbeknownst to her, give her a commonality with at least one of the people she's not looking for.

It wouldn't really be that hard to read.

Esme picked it up from a mile away. It went off like a light bulb in her head. The stereotypical portrayal of an idea suddenly, and almost divinely received.

She didn't like Sal. But she didn't like anyone. And this was a way out that would slip right under the fence.

Quietly, she stepped out on the porch.

"You're taking me with you," she said simply.

Not 'us.' 'Me.'

"Give me one good reason why I should," Sal said, her icy tone unmistakeable. That Esme knew exactly what was on her mind was no longer a huge surprise. It was more of a general annoyance. Like having a mosquito in your bedroom that kept buzzing in your ear. "After all, ye might find yerself with another death to pin on me."

Low blow? Oh yes it was, and Sal knew it.

"I ain't comin' back anytime soon," she continued. "So if you bitch out on the whole thing, gettin' a ride back here's your responsibility."

"I won't be coming back either," Esme said, coldly. "If the cards are played correctly, there will be no more deaths to of anyone I care about to pin on you. Besides, it was the Professor's fault anyway."

There, she said it.

"You weren't singin' that tune when you buried Sophie," Sal said bitterly. "So if it was all the Professor's fault, why blame me?"

"Because you were there," it is the simplest answer of all.

"So for all your hive-mind, you ain't the sharpest tool in the shed, then, huh?"

She took a drag and exhaled straight up.

"Unless you're admitting you were wrong. That'd be a fuckin' first."

"It isn't a hive mind," Esme snapped, "Someone has to have told you this, or maybe you didn't listen. We were not wrong, when you have a piece of your soul ripped from you, then you can lecture us for our behavior."

"I don't make a habit of wasting my time learning about people I don't particularly like. You blamed me, because I was there, and then changed yer tune when you learned more. Smacks of bein' wrong to me."

Then she sighed.

"But you want to get out of this place, so I guess that counts for somethin'."
